This kinetic art table was created by Bruce Shapiro after he abandoned his medical practice 25-years go to pursue the meditative practice of sand art.Titled the Sisyphus Kinetic Art Table, this kinetic project uses primarily industrial designs inspired by the mythological story of a doomed Greek man cursed with pushing a boulder up a mountain, only to have it come back down and hit him. Shapiro uses CNC machines and magnetized metal balls that draw elaborate and extremely detailed patterns across grains of sand. Shapiro has been creating sculptures for the last 20 years and recently partnered with Nordeast Makers along with a Kickstarter campaign that offers the tables in up to three sizes. According to My Modern Met, “Sisyphus has no on/off switch. It simply plugs in and automatically calibrates itself, loads a default playlist of paths, and begins playing. You can control playback, speed of play, and table-lighting from a mobile app or by using any browser to connect to Sisyphus with WiFi.
